Competition Information
We want competing at a Scottish Grappling event to be as straightforward as possible.
The information below covers the general arrangements and policies that apply across our competitions. Details specific to an individual event — including registration deadlines, weigh-in times, schedules, available divisions and any event-specific requirements — will always be published on the relevant event page.
Choosing Your Division
Competitors are responsible for registering in the correct age, weight and belt or experience category.
Please check your registration carefully before the published amendment deadline for each event. Where changes are required, these should be made through the method specified on the event page.
For junior and juvenile competitors, we use experience categories designed to provide appropriate matches while recognising that belt colour alone does not always provide an accurate indication of competitive experience.
When entering a junior or juvenile competitor, please ensure that their total training and competition experience is accurately reflected in their registration.
Division Mergers & Match Opportunities
We aim to provide competitors with meaningful matches wherever reasonably possible and structure our competitions with the aim of giving competitors at least two matches wherever entries allow.
Where there are insufficient entries to run a division as originally entered, competitors may be moved or divisions merged to create suitable matches. Depending on the circumstances, this can include reasonable adjustments to weight, age or experience categories.
Junior and juvenile mergers are considered particularly carefully, taking account of the age, weight and experience of the competitors involved.
While we will always try to maximise opportunities to compete, the number of matches available will ultimately depend on entries and the structure of each division. We therefore cannot guarantee a particular number of matches or that a competitor will remain in their originally selected division.
Competitors from the same academy may be matched against one another. A match against a teammate is a valid competition match and is not, in itself, grounds for a refund or withdrawal from the division.
Weigh-ins & Weight Changes
Competitors must make the weight limit for the category in which they are registered. There is no weight allowance.
The weigh-in procedure and timings for each competition will be published in the event information.
Competitors should ensure their registered weight is accurate and make any permitted changes before the event's published amendment deadline.
Where a competitor fails to make their registered weight, we cannot guarantee that an alternative division or match will be available.
Withdrawals & Refunds
Please make sure you are able to attend before registering for an event.
Registration fees are subject to the refund and withdrawal policy published on the relevant event page on Smoothcomp. This includes the applicable refund periods, deadlines and any event-specific arrangements.
Competitors who choose to withdraw, or who do not wish to compete against an allocated opponent, should not assume that they will be entitled to a refund.
Where we are unable to provide a competitor with a match, the options available will be dealt with in accordance with the policy published for that event.
Competitors should therefore check the refund and withdrawal information on the relevant Smoothcomp event page before registering.
On the Day
Competition schedules are managed through Smoothcomp. Competitors should follow the real-time start time shown on Smoothcomp, as schedules can move during the day.
Competitors should be ready and available when called and should follow the instructions of event staff regarding warm-up areas, the bullpen and access to the competition area.
Appropriate footwear must be worn whenever competitors are away from the warm-up or competition mats.
Once competition has finished, competitors should leave the matside competition area to allow space for those preparing to compete.
Coaches & Spectators
Spectators are welcome at Scottish Grappling events. Admission arrangements and prices are published for each individual competition.
Adult spectators, including parents or guardians accompanying junior competitors, are subject to the applicable spectator admission charge.
Coaches may be admitted without spectator charge through our coach-pass system. The arrangements for obtaining coach passes, including any applicable limits or deadlines, will be published for each event.
Competition Rules
Scottish Grappling competitions generally operate under the current IBJJF ruleset, together with any Scottish Grappling modifications or event-specific provisions published for the competition.
Competitors and coaches are responsible for familiarising themselves with the rules applicable to their age and belt or experience level before competing.
